Beautiful and very well maintained National Wildlife Service property. This is a large property with room for any size rig or RV. The visitor center is your starting point and won't disappoint. Auto tour with hiking trails about the property. I had 3 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming.

There is a beautiful observatory with large binoculars fixed in spots throughout the observatory. We saw three baldeagles and many other eagles and waterfowl that we wouldn't have otherwise seen. The Steamboat Bertrand museum is in the same building as the observatory. The artifacts in the museum are well preserved, which allows you to have a wonderful experience taking a glimpse into the past.

Bring binoculars, grab your camera, quietly walk a trail & find a place to sit. You may be amazed! Also on the Flyway with many thousands of birds during migration times. Fishing is terrific during the seasons.....yes, summertime & winter ice fishing. Price? Just $3.00 a carload. Three dollars & worth every penny! And the cargo of the Bertrand? On display from its 1869 sinking. Birdwatching? Too many species to list...and you can watch from a heated & air conditioned location or outside.

Imagine if an Amazon shipment was sunk and dredged up 200 years later. That's sort of the impression the sunken Steamboat Bertrand gives. It is amazing to see the range of housewares, from waffle irons to pickles to bullwhips, were recovered from this wreck. The museum is lovely and definitely worth a stop if you're traveling through the area!

DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is so worth a visit. One of my favorite places. I like to visit at various times during the year and always see something different. The visitor's center is full of interesting facts and the Bertrand museum is fascinating ! Especially in the early spring, I enjoy just sitting in there and listening to all the sounds outside (a speaker pumps in the sound). I enjoy the Cottonwood Nature trail for its peace and listening to the sounds of nature.

We came here to see the wreck and artifacts of the Bertrand, which sank in 1865.
The air conditioned museum (free entry) is a great respite from the hot, humid Nebraska heat. The displays and info are interesting, quite the time capsule of daily, common items used 160 years ago.
Being a wildlife refuge as well, there is a nice viewing window over the river where one can see turtles on tree stumps, birds of prey and displays of other furtive, people-avoiding animals. Lots of morel mushrooms grow here in spring.
The site of the wreck itself is kinda boring, as it's just a dirty brown water pond with nothing to see but informational signs, which are interesting. But man, it sure is hot out there at high noon!
