I am always on the hunt for things off the beaten path! This little gem is full of history about Destin and Fort Walton area. Amazing information, artifacts, hands-on exhibits, and the property also houses the first Destin post office! There is also a scavenger hunt for the kiddos as you maneuver throughout the museum. It is a non-profit organization that helps keep the good old days alive and well.
When you arrive, you will be greeted with the kind young lady willing to tell you all about any questions you may have! Did you know Destin has a fishing rodeo? And the Primrose is 100 years old in May this year? And Mr Destin wasn't married but loved to paint. He was an artist and a talented fisherman.
You can also pick up brochures and maps for the area while you are there. Stop in and say hi and break away from the normal hectic touristy traps! Take a day to see what the locals are all about!

The Destin History & Fishing Museum gives a quick look at Destin's fishing past. The exhibits include old fishing gear, photos, and a wall full of mounted fish. It tells the story of how Destin grew from a small fishing town to a big tourist spot. The museum is small but filled with interesting facts, making it a great stop for those curious about local history or fishing.

Quaint little history walk of Destin. There isn’t a ton here, but a good repository and retelling of the city’s past and characters. It’s a lot of reading, but thorough overview of lives and living. The kids were given a scavenger hunt to keep them busy and entertained with a little gift at the end. $10 general admission, $5 kids, under 5 is free. Enjoy!

Nice little 1-2 hour experience that is also set up to be good for kids. Destin history so interesting to read about. Life-size fish exhibits great for kids. Tons of great trivia (a few photos attached). Didn’t take photos of the fish—sorry!

This was a great day trip activity for my children. They have a scavenger hunt available for the kids at no cost. Alot of nice exhibits and a very inexpensive price!

A very unexpected surprise. FANTASTIC!!!! Destin has an amazing history, this museum tells its story in an exceptional way, they even have a scavenger hunt that takes you through the museum. The exhibits are a mix between their history, marine life and fishing.
The staff is fantastic, non intrusive but there to offer a more in-depth story. It was so fascinating they we spent over 2 hours in relatively small building.
A MUST SEE!!!!

This small, local museum in Destin offers a focused glimpse into the region’s fishing heritage, but it’s definitely a niche experience. Our visit with kids highlighted both its strengths and its limitations.

While the space is compact and the number of exhibits limited, our children enjoyed it—one fascinated by fishing, the other by reading detailed descriptions. That said, this isn’t a modern or interactive museum. Exhibits are mostly static, and the experience leans heavily on reading and plaques rather than engaging displays.

For families with kids who enjoy reading or have a specific interest in fishing history, it can be a worthwhile stop. Otherwise, younger or more active children may find it underwhelming. The museum would benefit from more hands-on activities, child-friendly attractions, or even audio guides to enrich the experience.

A quiet, educational stop if you’re looking to learn a bit about the local culture—but expect a traditional museum setup rather than an immersive one.

Perfect activity to kill some time or rainy day. It doesn't take very long so it is easy to fit in your schedule. My 3 year old grandson found it interesting.

This place was neat! While this is my 7th year coming to Destin to visit I wanted to take my daughters to do something different. It was very quiet, the tickets are cheap & they even give you a discount for children that are in school. I love the nostalgia of this place!! My 5 year old sat at this kids table that had coloring pages & crayons, so she sat & colored while my teen wondered around. Our fav part of the museum was the kitchen area w/ the sowing machine & other neat knickknacks! We loved the old pianos & they had this old wheel chair that looked similar if not exactly like the one from the movie “The Secret Garden”

We ventured in the First Post Office Destin ever had & it was the cutest neatest thing ever! They have a letter you can read from a desperate mother pleading for her son not to go to the military. You could feel her pain just reading her letter!

We enjoyed our trip here! Very educational & if you have enough kids w/ you they have a scavenger hunt!
