Quiet preserve with trails through the woods and a grass trail through the prarie. The hardwood forest interpretive could use a little more maintenance, but it offers beautiful views of the Kishwaukee River. The trail on the other side of the bridge is overgrown and impassable. Head out to the south branch trail to see a log cabin built in 1835! The south branch trail ends (does not loop) so you have to backtrack. Wish the trails were a little longer here and did not suddenly end, but it's still a beautiful preserve!

It is a very nice forest preserve. There are several trails. Most are easy. We ventured over the bridge to hike. The trail was overgrown and had some fallen trees that we had to maneuver around. We did see trees gnawed along the banks. Signs of a beaver presence. It is beautiful walking along the water. There is a nature center, but it was not open. They have pit toilets open to use and picnic tables. It was not very busy when we visited it on a Saturday afternoon. Enjoy a nice walk in the woods and take in the beauty of nature.

Great educational center staffed with friendly and informative people.
They have an African sulcata tortoise they rescued from the exotic animal trade, named TJ who has free run of the educational center.

Great loop to take a walk. Outhouses could be a little better. Snow sledding hill.

Enjoyed the alil hike that included crossing the walking bridge over the water. Saw quite a few healthy looking young fish on the other side of bridge. Saw some pretty lil wild flowers & enjoyed alil visit to the Russel Nature Preserve. Met a very friendly polite Gal who worked there at the Nature Preserve who was very knowledgeable about the Adorable Box Turtles, the other Turtles who prefer to stay in water more, a Tough Lil Gal Turtle they rescued from some harsh conditions in her former environment/? who is getting a lot of TLC to help her become a lot happier & much healthier, an Old Snake that was a rather small breed, a Lizard, a Frog who preferred it's privacy☺️ & a very Pretty Gentle & quite Friendly lil white Dove w/ a dark Blue color marking around neck❣️ So very thankful to have been invited inside (my Husband needed the extra nudge) by the Gal working there as we both enjoyed & came out w/ alil more knowledge of & appreciation for wildlife?. P.S. Remember every lil amt. of a $ Donation is very kindly appreciated & every bit goes to help w/ the upkeep of these Forest Preserves through these wonderful people that are compassionate toward all the Nature Preserves needs & work hard to keep our Wild Life healthy & well & or properly populated. Enjoy Your Visit if U decide to Go. U won't B disappointed if U❤️Nature & Wildlife?.

Ive been taking my dogs, children, and now grand children, to Russell Woods for 22 years. Its beautiful and well maintained with lots of trails to hike and the river to play in. The learning center is always fun for the kids too. Unfortunately camping isn't allowed there anymore but its still a great place to spend a few hours. Its close to home, but you can still feel like you're lost in nature!
