What a wonderful place. Took my wife there for her birthday and a little surprise with some of our adult children joining us a little bit later. The weight staff was wonderful and didn’t seem to be in a rush while we took up space waiting. We were pampered and Had a wonderful time. Loved the dinner, the food was exceptional, and can’t wait to go again. The menu was personalized with happy birthday to my wife, there was a birthday card on the table, signed by all the staff that made her feel great. And I showed this to a friend and They can’t wait to go there now. It’s a bit of a hike from Sacramento to Penn Valley, but well worth the trip. Great atmosphere, great service, exceptional food! I booked a reservation for my fiancé and I and mentioned we’d be celebrating his birthday. Twelve 28 when above and beyond! They printed us a custom menu with a happy birthday message and his name and the entire staff signed a birthday card for him! And the food…amazing! We got the lamb and the schnitzel and both were perfect! Great flavor and stunning presentation! It was a great night that we are still raving about today.

Chef Zach‘s food is always stunning, exceptional, and as close to perfection as any food can get. You’re treated like family when you visit this family run restaurant and you certainly don’t get the pretentiousness that you often get from places that serve this caliber of food. Ingredients are seasonal, locally sourced, the menu is ever-changing and always thoughtful. is be never left here wanting more and that is why this is my favorite place to dine when I visit Nevada County.

Worth the trip! A kaleidoscope of delightful flavors and textures make many of Chef Zach's dishes Michelin star-quality for creativity, execution and presentation. Recently had sumptuous pasta including farfalle and risotto entrées equal to the best of the Bay Area (or Italy, for that matter). And the best crispy pork belly, ever. A comfortable, casual, family-run restaurant, Twelve 28 Kitchen is a Northern California gem.

I can't say enough good things about 1228. It is by far our favorite restaurant anywhere. Each season we look forward to finding out what new dishes Zach has created. He never disappoints! The sauce, the garnishes, the main ingredients, all play together well, but also offer different taste experiences bite by bite. Every dish he creates is a symphony of flavors that make eating dinner a fun experience!

As a gluten free diner, I appreciate the knowledgeable staff when it comes to knowing what dishes are OK for me to order. Sometimes, the gluten free choices cause me to try something might not ordinarily order, but I am always pleasantly surprised and happy to add to my repertoire!

We have eaten at 1228 many times over the last ten years with both guests and large groups. We are so happy to have a place like this to treat our friends. We love the food, the friendly service, and the live music! We love you, 1228!

I was delighted to find this fine dining experience tucked in a shopping mall strip in Pen Valley. It is a bit of a trek for those of us that are further north on the 49 but the experience is worth the trip.

The food was delicious, and the service of the wait staff was great. Great job on the options provided for people with dietary restrictions. The space is tight. On my 2 visits we were at the big table. I definitely was cramped on the bench.

My husband and I came for an evening out, much delayed. And we were greeted with sincerity, absolutely amazing and thoughtful food, down to the last detail.

Literally this meal was probably the best food we’ve had in at least two counties but definitely the best meal I’ve had in years.

It is a few days later and I am still thinking about the scallops. Go each single ingredient was cooked to perfection, the planning, the mastery.

It was all outstanding.

It's hard to believe this gem of gastronomy is in an inauspicious location in Penn Valley. It could be a destination and all the buzz in any foodie big city. The family run aspect is warm and welcoming. The changing menu is over the top delicious, things you would never make at home and stop you in your tracks. It's a wonderful place for a special occasion, or just when you want to have really special delicious dining experience. Run, don't walk!
